Graduate Student Representatives
The Society of Systematic Biologists Council includes two graduate student members. Each student representative serves for a term of two years and is voted on by our student members. The two student members overlap with one another for one year, thus we have an election for a new student member each year. The SSB Graduate Student Councilors aid the society in developing initiatives to better serve our student members, participate in council meetings to provide input, and engage with student representatives from other societies (e.g. the American Society of Naturalists and the Society for the Study of Evolution) to support joint activities, such as student-oriented events at the Evolution meetings.
We advertise the call for student council nominations each year, with reviews of the nominees concluding in January. Nominations can be submitted on behalf of the student or students are welcome to nominate themselves. To be eligible, you must be a current graduate student and a member of SSB. The current student representatives will evaluate the nominations and select the short list of candidates. Then, a ballot will be sent to all of the current student members for a vote.
If you are interested in serving as a student representative on the SSB council, please contact one of the current Executive Council members if you have any questions.
