Ad Hoc funding requests procedure

SSB council has approved an annual allotment of ad hoc funding available to society members that can be used for a range of activities that further SSB's goals of advancing the study of  systematic biology. While there are few specific guidelines for exactly how these funds will be used, we expect that they will be used to supplement larger efforts within, or connected to, the society (e.g., student participation in workshops, or outreach activities), and they will not be used to supplement or fund an individual’s research program. With that said, we welcome creative requests that could make use of these ad hoc funds.

The total amount of ad hoc funds is limited to ~$8000 during the 2018-2019 fiscal year (July 1, 2018 - June 30, 2019). There is no deadline for proposals and requests will be considered on a rolling basis until funds are depleted. We aim to fund more than one proposal per year and requests should reflect this goal. All requests should be for a fixed amount and requests that involve an open-ended amount will not be considered. In addition, each ad hoc allocation will be issued as a single check and any downstream distributions of these funds will be the responsibility of the requestor. Finally, all awardees are expected to acknowledge and recognize SSB’s contribution to their event/activity.

Consideration for SSB ad hoc funds is now open. Applications should be sent to Mark Holder, Program Director (programdirector@systematicbiologists.org), and should consist of a short description of how the proposed funds will be used and a description of how these funds will enhance or meet the goals of the proposed activity. This application should not exceed one page and should be submitted as a pdf document, ideally on letterhead of the proposer's home institution.
