Resources for "Distance-Based" Science

Science–especially evolutionary biology–is a very social and collaborative endeavor. In the face of social distancing policies to slow the spread of pandemic SARS-CoV-2, many of us are working hard to adapt our research, labs, collaborations, teaching, etc. to function while keeping physically isolated. Below are some resources that may be helpful.

Resources for your lab

  • How to Science in a Pandemic – by Gina Baucom and lab members (U. Michigan)
  • The Lenski Lab Health Plan for the New Coronavirus Outbreak – by Richard Lenski (Michigan State U.)
  • Some Advice for PhD Students and Their Mentors in the Time of Coronavirus – by Meghan Duffy

Resources for teaching

  • Going Online in a Hurry: What to Do and Where to Start – by Michelle D. Miller
  • Teaching in the Time of COVID-19 – by Terry McGlynn
  • Moving Classes Online on Short Notice: Some Strategies – by Karl Stolley
  • Shifting your biology class online? These resources can help – by Alison Dell
  • Dr. Danna Young's Twitter thread: Teaching with Zoom Cheat Sheet
Do you have some advice, helpful resources, and/or fun anecdotes about maintaining your research or classes while social distancing? We will be happy to add them to this page or tweet about them. Please the SSB Communications Director (communications@systematicbiologists.org) or mention @systbiol on Twitter!
