Apply to Join the SSB Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Committee
SSB is looking for dedicated members to serve on our Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee to lead vital efforts to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Society for Systematic Biology.
The DEI committee has been established as a standing committee, with an elected DEI Director, who serves on the executive council. The director shall chair the committee initially, but may appoint a chair from the committee on an annual basis.
Standing committee members will serve a three-year term, but initially, terms will vary in length (i.e., 2, 3 and 4 years) to ensure continuity for ongoing projects; members shall not serve more than 2 consecutive terms. Student terms will be 2 year terms, but this can be extended to 3 years if they transition to early career during their term. We encourage people from across the gender spectrum. Not all diversity work can or should be done by people of colour, members of the LGBTQI+ community, and/or white women, and thus we strongly encourage applicants who do not identify as members of these groups as well.
The committee will comprise six people, of which there will be a minimum of 1 member each of the student and early career professionals category. We expect that this combination of six members will be heterogeneous in terms of diversity axes.
Ideal candidates for these positions are passionate about diversity, equity, and inclusion, and able to work collaboratively. The committee is tasked with developing the DEI mission of SSB and implementing initiatives to diversify SSB and the field of evolutionary biology. Members of this committee will be working closely with the DEI committees of ASN and SSE to develop synergistic projects that support tri-society initiatives.
For consideration, individuals must be members of SSB (go to the SSB Member Management Portal to join, renew, or verify your SSB membership). To apply, please send the following materials to [email protected] (include "DEIC Application" in the subject line) by October 15, 2020:
Applications will be reviewed by the President of SSB, the Diversity Director, and 5 additional members who are not already existing members of the DEI committee from the student council and past-president’s list. The deadline to submit your application is October 1, 2020. Applicants will be notified of the status of their application by November 1st, 2020, and terms will begin January 1, 2021.
