Call for applications for a new Editor-In-Chief of the BSSB

Call for expressions of interest and nominations!

The Society of Systematic Biologists is recruiting an Editor-in-Chief to lead The Bulletin of the Society of Systematic Biologists (BSSB). Founded in 2021 to make publishing more accessible for members of the society, BSSB publishes manuscripts that advance our understanding of the Earth's biodiversity, with a special focus on investigations that describe how species are related (i.e., phylogeny), identified (i.e., species delimitation or taxonomic practice), or have evolved (e.g., phylogeography, biogeography). BSSB also publishes papers that advance the theory or methods used in data analysis, studies of the culture and practice of systematics, and reports on symposia and workshops important to the community.

BSSB is at a moment of transition. The journal will be indexed as of 2026, and so is likely to attract more submissions. We seek a leader who will work with the society to define and support the direction and operations for BSSB in light of this anticipated change in submission volume. We seek  a candidate who will take into consideration the mission of the journal, solicit and incorporate feedback from users about the publishing platform, and who is willing to learn about and consider diverse approaches to publishing.

The Editor-in-Chief of BSSB will be a compensated, three-year term, beginning in January 2027. This role is open to members from any country and in any professional role, with colleagues having  experience with empirical systematics and/or monographic research especially encouraged to apply.  Inquiries and nominations can be sent to [email protected], with a target deadline for identifying candidates of September 15, 2026.
